Types of craps bets

The game of craps has become hugely popular in casinos ever since the advent of the game many years ago. Online casinos have also followed suit, meeting consumer demands with online versions of the popular game. Regardless of where you like to play craps, it’s important to get an understanding of the basic concepts and rules behind the game before you start playing. Additionally, learning about the various types of craps bets can and will help immensely so you know what the odds are for each particular bet and the smartest decisions to make when placing your bets across the table.

When playing craps, you will come across a variety of bets you can make. If you’re not sure what each bet entails, then you are going to look like an amateur standing at the table. The fundamental bet in craps is called the pass line bet. With this bet, players are assuming that the shooter will roll the point number before they roll a 7. This type can also be won if a 7 or 11 is rolled on the come out roll.

In many casinos, if a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 is thrown on the come out roll, the casino allows pass line bettors to take odds. What this means is that these casinos allow players to place from one to five or more times the pass line bet behind the line. If the point is rolled again before a 7 is rolled, this additional bet automatically wins. These bets are free from any house edge, and that’s why most serious craps players take advantage of this type of betting. For the “Come” wagers, you have essentially the same rules as the pass line bet but they can only be made after the come out throw.

In craps, players can also choose to make a “don’t come” bet. The don’t come bet is essentially the opposite of a come bet, and means the player is wagering on the fact that a 7 will come before a point throw. Conversely, on the come out throw a 7 or 11 means the player loses, whereas a 2, 3, or a 12 automatically wins. Most serious craps players don’t like making these types of bets (even though the house odds are pretty much the same for these bets as they are for the pass line and come bets.) As a matter of fact, serious craps players often think making these types of bets is poor taste and the mark of an amateur.

There are other types of craps bets, known as proposition bets, that are usually found in the center of a craps table. These bets generally have a much higher house advantage, but with the potential for players to increase their earnings dramatically if they win one of these bets. There are various proposition bets a player can make depending on the casino you’re in.

A few common proposition bets include the one roll bet, which wagers that the player will roll an 11, 3, 2, or 12. A hardway proposition bet means the player is betting on the fact that the shooter will make a hardway number such as 4-4 (before throwing a 7 or an 8 the easier way;) the hard 4 (2-2),  or hard 10 (5-5.) This proposition also wagers that the shooter can roll a hard 6 (3-3) or a hard 8 (4-4). The odds are stacked against the players with this type of bet, but if you win you can expect a dramatic increase in your earnings.

There are several more proposition bets, but those are by far the most common when considering the various amount of bets a player can make. Players can also make place, buy and lay bets. With this type of bet, players can “Buy” individual numbers (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10), place their bets in the come area and hope that the number is rolled before a 7. The lay bet is the opposite, where players wager that the shooter will roll a 7 before the number that is “laid” is rolled.

There are various bets in a craps game and for the novice player, it may seem very daunting. That’s why a clear understanding of what each bets means before you play will help you enormously during the game. If you feel too intimidated to try playing at a casino craps table the first time, there are many online casinos that will allow you to practice for free so you understand the rules of the game and what to do before you enter a casino. This can be an excellent way to introduce yourself to the world of craps, and understand what each bet means before you hit a casino.
